Columbia Engineering Students Named 2020 Millennium Fellows
Three SEAS students have been chosen for the UN Academic Impact Millennium Fellows Class of 2020

Agnes Thornberg ‘22, Burcu Cetin ’23, and Virginia Yang ‘21 join 15 other Columbia students selected by the President’s Office for UN Academic Impact Millennium Fellowships, a partnership between the UN and the Millennium Campus Network that supports undergraduate leadership to advance UN Sustainable Development Goals in their communities.

Agnes Thornberg is an Egleston Scholar studying mechanical engineering whose desire to make a global impact was solidified after a gap year interning in Jakarta, Indonesia. Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, Burcu Cetin, also an Egleston Scholar, takes an entrepreneurial approach to combine engineering and computing for social impact and is particularly interested in open innovation platforms to generate ideas and design sustainable projects. Rising senior Virginia Jiang is a chemical engineer interested in clean energy sources. She recently received the Chopey Scholarship in recognition of her impact on the field of sustainable biotechnology in the service of public interest.
Columbia Engineering’s Fellows were among 1,438 students chosen from more than 15,000 applicants. 80 campuses in 20 nations were chosen to host Fellows this year, with Columbia selected as one of 29 campuses in the Americas. A graduation ceremony will be held for the Class of 2020 on Wednesday, November 18th, 10am-12pm EST.
