Trey Gilliland

Trey Gilliland is from Danville, Kentucky and graduated from Boyle County High School. At Columbia Engineering, he plans on majoring in Computer Science and is excited to explore engineering through research and other hands-on experiences.

After taking his first IT classes his freshman year, Trey found a passion for web design and soon after developed his first website for his grandmother's boutique. Throughout high school, he continued to learn about web design while exploring the field of Computer Science through various projects such as web applets and game design. While at the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program, Trey conducted a group research project based around an app to help college students alert campus safety when feeling unsafe to prevent sexual assault on campuses. After finding an interest in politics through AP U.S. Government and Politics, Trey took on a position as a web developer for a local sheriff campaign. He developed and administrated the campaign website, ran social media campaigns, and assisted in campaign events throughout his senior year. He is excited to see the other aspects of engineering and computer science while at Columbia and cannot wait to see what kinds of projects he and his classmates will work on in the future.

In high school, Trey participated in many extracurricular activities, volunteering opportunities, and clubs, serving as president of both the DECA and the Student Technology Leadership Program clubs. One of his favorite opportunities was volunteering at his school's educational summer program, Black and Gold Academy, where he helped with LEGO robotics, Virtual Reality, and Breakout classes.

Although he started high school playing soccer and football, he found a love for running after joining his school's Track & Field team. He began running Track & Field as a Freshman and joined the Cross Country team his Junior year and hopes to continue running while in school. His favorite memory from high school was winning the Class AA Boys 4x800m state relay and then winning the Class AA State Track Meet with both the boys and girls track teams his senior year. When he is not running, he enjoys playing video games and sports, particularly frisbee.
