David Tew

Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Tew is the Founder and CEO of Step Function, an energy and resources startup focused on accelerating technology development with AI/ML-enhanced design tools.  He is also the former Deputy Director of Technology and a Program Director at ARPA-E, where he led the INTEGRATE, DIFFERENTIATE, and REEACH programs.  Prior to ARPA-E, he held various leadership roles at United Technologies Corporation (now RTX), including positions at its Research Center, Pratt & Whitney, and UTC Power units.  

 He holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Michigan; an SM and PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT; and an MBA from Columbia Business School.  He teaches courses in Propulsion and Heat Transfer.
