Celebrating Our Circle of Connections

How Columbia Brings Engineers Together With a Little Help From Pi

Feb 14 2023 | By Logan Lee

Whether it's working on a project with classmates, seeking advice from an instructor, or forming a network with industry professionals, new and pioneering leaders at Columbia Engineering come together, grow, and endeavor to solve humanity’s problems, big and small, in myriad ways.

February 14 - March 14

These connections are the foundation of the Columbia Engineering community, and they don't end when students receive their degrees. Alumni go on to become leaders who engineer for the benefit of humanity in their communities and industries. Many credit the connections they formed at Columbia Engineering for shaping their illustrious paths and professional successes.

Building upon the lifelong connections that Columbia helps facilitate, engineers also come together each year during the Pi Day challenge (February 14-March 14) to pay it forward for those following in their footsteps—allowing future students the same opportunities for growth and success that they themselves directly benefited from.

In a collective effort that spanned the globe last year, graduating seniors and alumni, families, faculty, and staff came together to raise over $1.4 million toward the School’s financial aid and development. This year, the Engineering Annual Fund encourages community members to rally together once more by giving back to the School—in honor of a fellow Columbia engineer—between February 14 and March 14, 2023.

By making a gift of financial support in honor of someone whose life touched yours at Columbia, members of the Engineering community can provide impactful student aid and facilitate the opportunities for connection that a top-notch education at Engineering helps afford.

This Pi Day challenge, alumni Tom Caulfield BS’82, MS’84, EngScD’86 and Sandra Eng-Caulfield BS’84, MS’86, MetE’87 are so inspired by the opportunities they had as students and by their connection to the School as lifelong Columbians that they are offering to match all gifts to the Pi Day challenge initiatives—the Columbia Engineering annual funds, class and community scholarships, and department support funds—dollar for dollar, up to $5,000, for a total of $31,415.

Perhaps there’s an instructor who challenged you to think differently, a mentor who supported you through a tough project, a partner who helped bring your ideas to life, or a classmate who became a lifelong friend. Whomever it may be, your gift made in that Columbia engineer’s name will make a meaningful impact and ensure that Engineering remains a place where the brightest minds can connect, grow, and keep paying it forward for generations to come.

What are you waiting for? Make your gift today and use the hashtag #SEASLovesPi to share the story of your Columbia connection in support of the next generation of Columbia engineers today.
